ssh -f -N -L 9999:chat.freenode.net:6667 machine.I.have.rights.on

...where chat.freenode.net:6667 is the machine/port you want to eventually get to, machine.i.have.rights.on is...well, that, and 9999 is an empty port on your local machine.

You'll be prompted for a password if you need one, after which you can put it in the background.

Then you can set up your chat software to talk to localhost:9999 and you're set.
== Asheville Brews Cruise ==

"Experience a taste of Asheville’s thriving local beer scene with an exclusive tour of three of our award-winning microbreweries." - http://www.brewscruise.com/asheville/

A big shout out to [http://www.talis.com Talis] for stepping up and sponsoring a portion of this event. Our first stop on the cruise will be a brewery slash pizza joint and Talis has generously offered to pay for our pizza. Yay!

==== Itinerary ====

# Pickup from the hotel is tentatively scheduled for 6:15pm. Those who haven't pre-paid should try to get there a little early.
# Stop #1 will be the Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. where we will sample 16-20 different beers and consume our delicious, alcohol-absorbing, [http://www.talis.com Talis]-sponsored pizza.
# Stop #2 will be Highland Brewing Company, "Asheville's 1st and largest brewing company"
# Stop #3 will be the French Broad Brewery which "specializes in a variety of European style beers."
# Expected return to the hotel is around 9:30-10pm

==== Cost & Payment ====

The cost for the cruise is $40 per person. You have two options for paying:

# Pay in advance by sending me $40 via [http://paypal.com PayPal].
# Bring $40 with you on the night of the cruise. I've been told they have a hand-held credit card machine for the cash-strapped.

Anyone who wants to can pay via PayPal, but I need at least 16 people to choose this option because the tour company wants to pre-bill my credit card for a minimum of 16 guests. There should be no fees involved if the money comes from your PayPal account or an associated bank account. The deadline for paying in advance is EOD Sunday, February 21st.

# Go to [http://paypal.com PayPal]
# Click on "Send Money"
# Enter lbjay@reallywow.com in the "To" field
# Enter your own address in the "From" field (unless you're logged in)
# Click the "Personal" tab and choose "Payment owed" from the options
# Click "Continue"
# On the next page you can specify a message Subject of "Brews Cruise"

==== Signup ====

== 12 Bones BBQ Dinner Excursion ==
(was a lunch excursion)

[http://www.12bones.com/ 12 Bones BBQ] is widely considered the best BBQ in Asheville [[http://www.yelp.com/biz/12-bones-smokehouse-asheville *]]. However it is only open from 11-4, M-F. We would like to organize a group so that we can rent out the place on Wednesday night. If we get at least 50 people, it will be doable.

'''When:''' Wednesday, February 24th

'''Time:''' Cash Bar: 6:00pm
Dinner: 6:30pm

'''Where:''' 5 Riverside Drive Asheville NC, 28801
*[http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=31+Woodfin+Street,+Asheville,+NC+28801+(Renaissance+Asheville+Hotel)&daddr=5+Riverside+Drive,+Asheville,+NC+28801-3134&geocode=FbUsHwIdtWIU-yF_M0r573W8WykTXk8JWPNZiDEFKzEaZpTYaQ%3BFQ36HgIdayEU-w&gl=us&hl=en&mra=cc&sll=35.592378,-82.556462&sspn=0.016053,0.038581&ie=UTF8&z=15 Driving Directions] (5 minutes)
*Cabbing Directions: If you all would like to organize into cabs, I would suggest meeting in the lobby of the hotel between 5:45pm and 6:00pm and figuring things out from there. While I would normally love to help out with 80 people taking cabs (insert sarcasm here), I'll probably already be at the venue. A couple of cab companies I found are:
**New Blue Bird Taxi Company - (828) 258-8331
**Checker Cab Service - (828) 254-1155

'''Menu:'''
This will be buffet style. So bring your appetite.
*Pulled Pork
*Chopped Beef Brisket
*Corn Bread
*Buns
*Mashed Sweet Taters
*Sweet Vinegar Coleslaw
*Collard Greens (contains meat)
*Fountain Drinks/Sweet Tea/Unsweetened Tea

== Werewolf! ==
It wouldn't be a tech conference unless we got together one evening to turn into a gang of murdering beasts and hyper-suspicious victims. Facilitated by the one and only mbklein.

* When: Wednesday evening
* Time: 8 PM
* Where: TBA. Watch this space.

=== About Werewolf ===

Werewolf (also known as Mafia) is a parlor game that has become [http://www.wired.co.uk/wired-magazine/archive/2010/03/features/werewolf.aspx the obsession of techie conferences everywhere]. At it's most basic, it's a game of information asymmetry -- a battle between an uninformed majority (the townspeople) and an informed minority (the werewolves who live and hunt among them). At its best, it's an off-the-wall paranoid screaming match. There are dozens of variations -- we'll start with the basics, and depending on everyone's stamina and desire to keep playing, save the tricky stuff for later. Hopefully by the end of the evening all the participants will be jibbering, jumpy, sleep-deprived lunatics incapable of trusting even their closest friends.

In other words, ''good times.''
== Working Out ==

Gotta make up for those beer and BBQ excursions somehow. Let's work out! Ideas: hiking, jogging, [http://www.crossfitasheville.com CrossFitting], surfing,...

=== CrossFit Asheville ===
[http://www.crossfitasheville.com CrossFit Asheville]
Contacted the gym, we're invited to the Monday night 6:30pm slot.

Who's in?
* Erik Hatcher (crossfit newb), can carpool three others
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)
* Jeff Sherwood (I'd be into getting in a Crossfit WOD or maybe a run)
* Jason Stirnaman (hiking, biking - don't mind the weather, lifting, cross-fitting)
* Jodi Schneider (CrossFitting sounds fun if we can fit in their schedule, yoga, walking, hiking)
* Erik Mitchell (only if we are not overwhelming their space - can fit 3 people in my car as wel)

=== Jogging ===
Meet in lobby at 6:30am any day next week.

* Monday: Erik Hatcher (too cold? I'll do the treadmill instead; 2-3 miles max)
**Perhaps a good 5 mile (or less as this is an out & back) run to the Biltmore house gate? - [http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/nc/asheville/724126642963377301 Suggested route to Biltmore]
**Looks good. Count me in. (John Barneson)
** Yitzchak Schaffer interested, 3-6 mi, 10:00 pace or so
** Emily Lynema sounds good, 5 is great, pace & distance flexible (although I might skip if it's really 31 degrees & raining!)
** Jean Rainwater, 5-6 mi, 10:00 pace
* Tuesday: Sounds like a great day for the Code4Lib Inaugural 10 miler - [http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/nc/asheville/805126642901812010 Suggested Route to the Grove Park Inn]
** Jean Rainwater, up for 10 miles if slowish means 10:00
* Wednesday: Erik Hatcher (2-3 miles max)
** Emily Lynema would be up for a 3-miler (presenting at 9:15am so have to be on time)
**Weather permitting - a hike around Mt Mitchell or Mt. Pisgah, blue ridge parkway or trail run? [http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=11835]
* Thursday:

=== Interested Parties for various exercise activities ===

* Erik Hatcher (game for both short, like 2 mile, jogs on Monday/Wednesday and CrossFitting, bring it!)
* Erik Mitchell (Run downtown asheville or the parkway? - great 12 mile climb up the parkway around Pisgah Mtn.), How about a Code4Lib half-marathon? (Why NOT! Let's do a Half Marathon) - Ray Schwartz
**Bike riding - yes might be sketchy given our current weather
**Hike up Looking Glass Rock [http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/pisgah/pisgah/guidedhikes/lookingglassrock.html]
* Emily Lynema (game for jogging, hiking, walking, jumping jacks; not crazy enough for parkway running!)
* Ray Schwartz (game for a run - why not a half marathon?!).
* Rick Johnson (Looking to fit in a 10, 12 ,and 8 mile run while in town. Was originally thinking I would go early in the morning: 6:30 or 7. May not be able to run together everytime but definitely looking for suggestions on good routes)
* Thom Cox (lifting, cardio, yoga--all good)
* Jason Stirnaman (hiking, biking - don't mind the weather, lifting, cross-fitting)
* Jean Rainwater (need to get some runs in where the footing's not treacherous and the temp is above freezing)
* Gerald Snyder (a couple mornings jogging would be good, but only 4 or 5 miles for me thanks)
* Jodi Schneider (CrossFitting sounds fun if we can fit in [http://www.crossfitasheville.com/schedule/ their schedule], yoga, walking, hiking)
* Becky Yoose (hiking (intermediate level max), walking, cheer others on while they run a half marathon)
* Carol Bean (does shivering in the cold count as exercise?)
* John Barneson (I'm game for a.m. runs 5-10 miles. I would love a nice scenic route and I don't mind trail running)
* Gabriel Farrell (running, yoga, pickup soccer?)
* Kevin Reiss (running/hiking)
* Jeff Sherwood (I'd be into getting in a Crossfit WOD or maybe a run)
* Nick Hanssens (yoga; I teach if there is space and interest)
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)
* Ranti Junus (yoga, walking, thumb wrestling - maybe)
* Mark Diggory (surfing,... kinda hard to find good waves in Asheville... will settle for a little hiking)
* Anna Headley (hacky sack in the hotel lobby - yes it counts as exercise)

== Sitting in a room together and half the time talking to each other out loud and half the time talking in IRC ==
* William Denton
* Mike Giarlo (fulfiller of destinies)
* /ignore mjgiarlo
* Antonio Barrera (trying to avoid a repeat of Portland)
* Jodi Schneider (one of the highlights!!!)
* Bess Sadler (can it be in the hospitality suite at 4am? That's the best!)
* Mark Matienzo
* ROSS DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANY MORE
* Ranti Junus (hoping somebody can help me hacking my chumby one to install [http://elinks.or.cz/ elinks] or [http://www.qtweb.net/ qtweb])
* Dan Chudnov (hoping for in-same-room IRC chat to be an olympic medal event in 2014)
* Michael Klein
== Asheville Brews Cruise ==

Yay!

==== Itinerary ====

==== Cost & Payment ====

== 12 Bones BBQ Dinner Excursion ==
(was a lunch excursion)

[http://www.12bones.com/ 12 Bones BBQ] is widely considered the best BBQ in Asheville [[http://www.yelp.com/biz/12-bones-smokehouse-asheville *]]. However it is only open from 11-4, M-F. We would like to organize a group so that we can rent out the place on Wednesday night. If we get at least 50 people, it will be doable.

'''When:''' Wednesday, February 24th

'''Time:''' Cash Bar: 6:00pm
Dinner: 6:30pm

'''Where:''' 5 Riverside Drive Asheville NC, 28801
*[http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=31+Woodfin+Street,+Asheville,+NC+28801+(Renaissance+Asheville+Hotel)&daddr=5+Riverside+Drive,+Asheville,+NC+28801-3134&geocode=FbUsHwIdtWIU-yF_M0r573W8WykTXk8JWPNZiDEFKzEaZpTYaQ%3BFQ36HgIdayEU-w&gl=us&hl=en&mra=cc&sll=35.592378,-82.556462&sspn=0.016053,0.038581&ie=UTF8&z=15 Driving Directions] (5 minutes)
*[http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=31+Woodfin+Street,+Asheville,+NC+28801+(Renaissance+Asheville+Hotel)&daddr=5+Riverside+Drive,+Asheville,+NC+28801-3134&geocode=FbUsHwIdtWIU-yF_M0r573W8WykTXk8JWPNZiDEFKzEaZpTYaQ%3BFQ36HgIdayEU-w&gl=us&hl=en&mra=cc&dirflg=w&sll=35.592378,-82.556462&sspn=0.016053,0.038581&ie=UTF8&z=15 Walking Directions] (30 minutes / 1.7 miles)
*Cabbing Directions: If you all would like to organize into cabs, I would suggest meeting in the lobby of the hotel between 5:45pm and 6:00pm and figuring things out from there. While I would normally love to help out with 80 people taking cabs (insert sarcasm here), I'll probably already be at the venue. A couple of cab companies I found are:
**New Blue Bird Taxi Company - (828) 258-8331
**Checker Cab Service - (828) 254-1155

'''Menu:'''
This will be buffet style. So bring your appetite.
*Pulled Pork
*Chopped Beef Brisket
*Corn Bread
*Buns
*Mashed Sweet Taters
*Sweet Vinegar Coleslaw
*Collard Greens (contains meat)
*Fountain Drinks/Sweet Tea/Unsweetened Tea

== Werewolf! ==
It wouldn't be a tech conference unless we got together one evening to turn into a gang of murdering beasts and hyper-suspicious victims. Facilitated by the one and only mbklein.
=== About Werewolf ===

== Working Out ==

Gotta make up for those beer and BBQ excursions somehow. Let's work out! Ideas: hiking, jogging, [http://www.crossfitasheville.com CrossFitting], surfing,...

=== CrossFit Asheville ===
[http://www.crossfitasheville.com CrossFit Asheville]
Contacted the gym, we're invited to the Monday night 6:30pm slot.

Who's in?
* Erik Hatcher (crossfit newb), can carpool three others
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)

=== Jogging ===

* Thursday:

* Kevin Reiss (running/hiking)
* Jeff Sherwood (I'd be into getting in a Crossfit WOD or maybe a run)
* Nick Hanssens (yoga; I teach if there is space and interest)
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)

Because you know it's going to happen

* William Denton
* Mike Giarlo (fulfiller of destinies)
* /ignore mjgiarlo
* Antonio Barrera (trying to avoid a repeat of Portland)
* Jodi Schneider (one of the highlights!!!)
* Bess Sadler (can it be in the hospitality suite at 4am? That's the best!)
* Mark Matienzo
* ROSS DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANY MORE
* Ranti Junus (hoping somebody can help me hacking my chumby one to install [http://elinks.or.cz/ elinks] or [http://www.qtweb.net/ qtweb])
* Dan Chudnov (hoping for in-same-room IRC chat to be an olympic medal event in 2014)
* Michael Klein

== Asheville Brews Cruise ==

Yay!

==== Itinerary ====

==== Cost & Payment ====

== Werewolf! ==
It wouldn't be a tech conference unless we got together one evening to turn into a gang of murdering beasts and hyper-suspicious victims. Facilitated by the one and only mbklein.
=== About Werewolf ===

* Kevin Reiss (running/hiking)
* Jeff Sherwood (I'd be into getting in a Crossfit WOD or maybe a run)
* Nick Hanssens (yoga; I teach if there is space and interest)
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)
* Ranti Junus (yoga, walking, thumb wrestling - maybe)
* Mark Diggory (surfing,... kinda hard to find good waves in Asheville... will settle for a little hiking)

== Sitting in a room together and half the time talking to each other out loud and half the time talking in IRC ==
* Antonio Barrera (trying to avoid a repeat of Portland)
* Mark Matienzo
* ROSS DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANY MORE
* Ranti Junus (hoping somebody can help me hacking my chumby one to install [http://elinks.or.cz/ elinks] or [http://www.qtweb.net/ qtweb])
* Dan Chudnov (hoping for in-same-room IRC chat to be an olympic medal event in 2014)
== Asheville Brews Cruise ==

Yay!

==== Itinerary ====

==== Cost & Payment ====

==== Signup ====

== Werewolf! ==
It wouldn't be a tech conference unless we got together one evening to turn into a gang of murdering beasts and hyper-suspicious victims. Facilitated by the one and only mbklein.

* When: Wednesday evening
* Time: 8 PM
* Where: TBA. Watch this space.

=== About Werewolf ===

* Kevin Reiss (running/hiking)
* Jeff Sherwood (I'd be into getting in a Crossfit WOD or maybe a run)
* Nick Hanssens (yoga; I teach if there is space and interest)
* Michael Vandenburg (Crossfit curious)
* Ranti Junus (yoga, walking, thumb wrestling - maybe)
* Mark Diggory (surfing,... kinda hard to find good waves in Asheville... will settle for a little hiking)

== Aims and Overview ==

The aim of this tutorial is to provide participants with a detailed conceptual understanding of how to publish Linked Data on the Web, and a gentle introduction to the practical and technical steps that make up the publishing process. In addition the tutorial will cover best practices in topics such as minting URIs for published data sets, vocabulary selection, choosing what RDF data to expose, and interlinking distributed data sets. Specific patterns will be presented for publishing different forms of data set, such as data from static files, relational databases and existing Web APIs. Participants will also be shown how to debug published data.

The second focus of the tutorial will be applications that consume Linked Data from the Web. We will give an overview about existing Linked Data browsers, Web of Data search engines as well as Linked Data Mashups and cover the existing software frameworks that can be used to build applications on top of the Data Web.

Lastly the tutorial will be to provide a collaborative space to explore putting some of the ideas of linked data into practice. The idea is that people can split off into groups, or work independently on adding linked data support to an existing application, exploring modeling issues of what vocabularies to use for particular data sets, and brain storming about new vocabularies that may be needed in the library world.

The tutorial will combine presentations by the tutors with demonstrations, interactive sessions, and group discussion. Other than a broad technical understanding of the Web development and Web publishing process, and a basic conceptual understanding of the Semantic Web, there are no pre-requisites for participation in the tutorial, which will be of interest to the full spectrum of code4lib2009 attendees, including researchers, developers, data managers/publishers and those seeking to commercially exploit the Semantic Web by publishing Linked Data.

=== Program Outline ===

==== 02/22 8PM pre-preconf drink/planning ====

Let's keep the drink/planning simple, as in, stick to the Hotel bar/restaurant rather than roving. This is assuming the hotel bar/restaurant provides a practical space for our drinking+planning activities. It is open to both organizers and attendees, since the hope is that this line will blur anyhow.

==== 02/23 AM Tutorial, Attendees: 48 ====

09:00 - 09:15 -- welcome and overview, mention PM FOAFing, hand out packets (edsu)

==== For inclusion in handout materials ====

This list could conceivably include a few single-page figures, charts, graphs, Lolcats or other helpful imagery. I think realistically the handout should be no more than about 20-25 double-sided pages.

Welcome to the wiki home of the New England "chapter" of [http://code4lib.org/ Code4Lib].

My friends, let's get something started, eh?

== 1st Meeting (BPL) ==

=== When & Where ===

'''Date & Time:''' Tuesday, December 9, 2008, 9:00am-5:00pm

'''Location:''' Boston Public Library, McKim Building, McKim Conference Room

=== What? ===

The current plan is to start the day with presentations and/or lightning talks. When we run out of those we can then break out into groups to discuss and experiment according to interests. Use the sections below for general ideas of things to do or actual topics or projects you'd be willing to present on.

==== Suggest some Topics ====

* Ripping open the guts of a particular lib app (by the author) as an architecture or implementation How-To (or How-Not-To) session?

==== Lightning (or Longer) Talks ====

* Scraping article metadata using the CiteULike parsers - JayL
* Update on code4lib 2009 conference planning - Jean Rainwater & Birkin Diana
* Extending Zotero: Citation Style Language - Jodi Schneider
* Semantic Web for Libraries or Microformats - Jodi Schneider
* Semi-controlled-folksonomic-tagging-vocabulary: Encouraging Useful Metadata Contributions - Chris Beer & Courtney Michael
* Common Knowledge at LibraryThing: Why Star Wars geeks are better than catalogers (for Star Wars stuff) - Tim Spalding
* A Vocabulary Browser in Solr, SKOS, and XForms - Michael Klein

=== Getting there ===

Follow the [http://www.bpl.org/general/directions.htm directions] to the Central Library. Go in, turn right, the conference room is on your left before you get to the cafe. If anyone's driving, may we suggest the garage at 100 Clarendon Street (next to Back Bay Station). Close by, and far less expensive than any of the other local garages. Or, search nearby parking at [http://boston.bestparking.com/ http://boston.bestparking.com/]

==== Voting process ====

* [http://whenisgood.net/necode4lib/2008/results/LWmrQy WhenIsGood results]
* [http://dilettantes.code4lib.org/voting_booth/election/results/5 Location voting results]

== Future meetings ==

Suggest some other, future locations below. Something not too hard to get to for folks in all corners of the N.E. area would be best

* Somewhere in Western Mass (a.k.a. 413; a.k.a. Northampton, MA; a.k.a Hamp) - This would work best for me, the further West, the more likely I can make it (ecorrado)
* I can probably offer free space in our Concord NH campus with good network and projectors, though I realize that may be too far north for some --Casey
* Somewhere in the Boston area
* Portland, Maine, of course. Where else? LibraryThing will buy donuts.
* I could suggest New Haven, but it isn't exactly a central location for this group. --dlovins
* +1 for Portland, ME. I might be able to arrange meeting space at the U of Southern Maine if this is a viable location. --jonvw
* Forbes Library during their business hours
* Possibly one of the Five Colleges?
* Boston Public Library (end by 9pm Monday through Thursday, or end by 5pm Friday through Sunday)
* Elsewhere? Add to this list...

== Who? ==

Welcome to the wiki home of the New England "chapter" of Code4Lib.

My friends, let's get something started, eh?

== 1st Meeting (BPL) ==

=== When & Where ===

'''Date & Time:''' Tuesday, December 9, 2008, 9:00am-5:00pm

'''Location:''' Boston Public Library, McKim Building, McKim Conference Room

=== What? ===

The current plan is to start the day with presentations and/or lightning talks. When we run out of those we can then break out into groups to discuss and experiment according to interests. Use the sections below for general ideas of things to do or actual topics or projects you'd be willing to present on.

==== Suggest some Topics ====

* Ripping open the guts of a particular lib app (by the author) as an architecture or implementation How-To (or How-Not-To) session?

==== Lightning Talks ====

* Scraping article metadata using the CiteULike parsers - JayL
* Update on code4lib 2009 conference planning - Jean Rainwater & Birkin Diana
* Extending Zotero: Citation Style Language - David Podboy & Jodi Schneider
* Semantic Web for Libraries or Microformats - Jodi Schneider
* Semi-controlled-folksonomic-tagging-vocabulary: Encouraging Useful Metadata Contributions - Chris Beer & Courtney Michael

=== Getting there ===

==== Voting process ====

* [http://dilettantes.code4lib.org/voting_booth/election/results/5 Location voting results]

== Future meetings ==

Jodi Schneider of Amherst College has already begun planning for a gathering hosted by Five Colleges. See below for possible dates.

==== NECode4Lib #2: Amherst, MA ====

* [http://whenisgood.net/necode4lib/2009 WhenIsGood page]
* [http://whenisgood.net/necode4lib/2009/results/Wew3Dh WhenIsGood results]

==== Even future-er ====
