= Code4Lib 2018 Conference Committees =

Hosting a conference is incredibly complex, and it cannot be done without the help of the entire community. If you are interested in being an awesome person and applying your skills to a particular part of the Code4Lib 2018 conference, create an account on this wiki and sign-up for one or more of the groups below (please provide a contact). Each committee must have a Primary Contact (chair), Secondary Contact (co-chair), and Documentarian (secretary). The role of the Documentarian is to transcribe key information to future conference committees, such as timelines, costs, process, etc. Feel free to improve the summary statements for each of the committees. When adding your name, please indicate 'v' if you are a veteran on the committee so that we ensure committees are not made up entirely of newbies.

We will assign a local contact (LPC) to each committee.

We want to bring the code{4}lib experience to the library community in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the great Commonwealth of Virginia area. Our hope is that meeting at the regional level will strengthen our local connections and develop more real world collaborative efforts.

We met quarterly throughout 2012. We've enjoyed a number of in depth technical presentations on a variety of topics. Meetings have been free to attend. Come and join me for an afternoon filled with circuits and silicon! We'll be learning the basics of breadboards and simple circuits, and will deconstruct and then rebuild our own input/output systems with Arduino. Learn the basics of programming to the Arduino...hardware will be provided, although you will need your own laptop (or are comfortable team learning with someone else). The goal of the workshop will be to give you enough knowledge that you can build a simple sensor to measure something in your environment (noise, temperature, light, moisture) and to make you more comfortable with working with hardware. With representatives present from Public, Academic, and Special Libraries, this looked to be a great start to rejuvenating the Chapter. (School Librarians, come out and play!) We had a great discussion about Linked Data. We reaffirmed that we'll hold quarterly meetings, and that doing so regularly will help keep things rolling. We hope to have diverse subjects to explore to keep everyone's interest. We'll hold off on formal governance until a larger group necessitates formality.

The Martin Luther King Library in the District would like help with [http://wikidc.org/wiki/Library_Lab Library Lab DC] if anyone would like to participate in that endeavour. This is also a wonderful place to go if you're looking for spot to house open collaboration.

== What is this? ==

Very few people plan to have a career in library technology. Maybe you have a background in traditional librarianship, but you'd like to be a systems librarian. Maybe you're an experienced programmer, but you're having trouble learning about library specific standards. This guide is a starting point for you. It will not attempt to be a replacement for university-level education in either library studies or computer science, but it will give you a general sense of the areas of technology that are used by libraries, background knowledge you'll need in order to work effectively in these areas, and advice and ideas on how to acquire necessary skills.

Advice in this guide should focus on concrete, immediately applicable skills whenever possible. Focus more on the why and use-cases rather than the technology. From a
programming perspective much of the technology isn't terribly
difficult and is well known at a basic level. How it's used, why
certain choices were made is the most important information to convey.
If you hired a programmer for a specific task, don't focus on
dictating technology, they should tell you what is current, but rather
what you need and want from the application. Helping them understand
how the data is accessed by your end-users if probably the most
valuable information you can convey.

Be prepared to answer questions and frustrations with library
standards that aren't really machine actionable. One older example is
METS, while it is XML, there is very little you can do to infer higher

We had a great discussion about Linked Data. We reaffirmed that we'll hold quarterly meetings, and that doing so regularly will help keep things rolling. We hope to have diverse subjects to explore to keep everyone's interest. We'll hold off on formal governance until a larger group necessitates formality.

The Martin Luther King Library in the District would like help with [http://wikidc.org/wiki/Library_Lab Library Lab DC] if anyone would like to participate in that endeavour. This is also a wonderful place to go if you're looking for spot to house open collaboration.

We had a great discussion about Linked Data. We reaffirmed that we'll hold quarterly meetings, and that doing so regularly will help keep things rolling. We hope to have diverse subjects to explore to keep everyone's interest. We'll hold off on formal governance until a larger group necessitates formality.

The Martin Luther King Library in the District would like help with [http://wikidc.org/wiki/Library_Lab Library Lab DC] if anyone would like to participate in that endeavour. This is also a wonderful place to go if you're looking for spot to house open collaboration.

With representatives present from Public, Academic, and Special Libraries, this looked to be a great start to rejuvenating the Chapter. (School Librarians, come out and play!) We had a great discussion about Linked Data. We reaffirmed that we'll hold quarterly meetings, and that doing so regularly will help keep things rolling. We hope to have diverse subjects to explore to keep everyone's interest. We'll hold off on formal governance until a larger group necessitates formality.

The Martin Luther King Library in the District would like help with [http://wikidc.org/wiki/Library_Lab Library Lab DC] if anyone would like to participate in that endeavour. This is also a wonderful place to go if you're looking for spot to house open collaboration.
