We want to bring the code{4}lib experience to the library community in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the great Commonwealth of Virginia area. Our hope is that meeting at the regional level will strengthen our local connections and develop more real world collaborative efforts.

We met quarterly throughout 2012. We've enjoyed a number of in depth technical presentations on a variety of topics. Meetings have been free to attend. Past host institutions have been the Smithsonian, GWU, and the Arlington Public Library. We're looking forward to a 2013 of the same calibre. If you are in the area, please do feel free to drop in. If you are unable to make it in person, check with the hosts to see if distance participation is an option. We did have one distance person with us at one of the Smithsonian meet ups. :)

Connect with fellow code-interested cultural heritage professionals at two side-by-side events: a DC-area code4lib unconference and an introduction to programming workshop. As typical of unconferences, the content and activities of the day are determined by the attendees. Bring your ideas! We encourage everyone to consider giving a 10-20 minute talk, a lightning talk, lead a workshop, or organize another activity.

The two events are intended to provide an inclusive, welcoming environment, supported by the [http://www.diglib.org/about/code-of-conduct/ DLF Code of Conduct]. The schedule includes opportunities for the attendees in each track to meet each other, including a plenary opening session, shared lightning talks, Day 2 afternoon unconference events, and combined coffee/lunch/snack breaks.

With representatives present from Public, Academic, and Special Libraries, this looked to be a great start to rejuvenating the Chapter. (School Librarians, come out and play!) We had a great discussion about Linked Data. We reaffirmed that we'll hold quarterly meetings, and that doing so regularly will help keep things rolling. We hope to have diverse subjects to explore to keep everyone's interest. We'll hold off on formal governance until a larger group necessitates formality.

The Martin Luther King Library in the District would like help with [http://wikidc.org/wiki/Library_Lab Library Lab DC] if anyone would like to participate in that endeavour. This is also a wonderful place to go if you're looking for spot to house open collaboration.

There were a couple of interesting meetings and events to attend that we shared with one another.

== Overview ==

The goal of the "Project Rideshare Board" was to create an application/environment/community to help enable institutions to collaborate on software development projects and foster technology mentorship/learning opportunities amongst libraries.

One analogy of the project would be akin to http://kickstarter.com/, although rather than soliciting financial contribution (although that ''may'' be what a particular institution wishes to contribute, say, for contracting some work, etc.) institutions would pledge what expertise, roles, and time commitment they could provide to help bring the project to fruition.

There was discussion over what the overall scope of what such an endeavor would entail; if and how libraries would break out of their current cultural habits of always going it alone; what technologies currently exist that could handle the needs of this; how participants would manage and mediate projects; and what would be needed to get started.

At the end, we decided what is necessary is a system that allows a project proposer to:

# Describe the project: what it is, some functional requirements, what "completion" means
# What you're bringing to the table
# What you need

There would also be some best practices documentation to improve the chances of project success, usefulness to the broadest audience (without losing the needs of the original proposers), least duplication of effort, and reusability of code/features.

We discussed the possibility of a core of volunteers that would keep an eye on projects and try to help keep the projects aligned with the best practices (if applicable) and perhaps lend guidance for certain groups.

No this is not a joke. If you haven't heard Rosy is an aspiring trapeze artists and wants to bring the fun to her friends in Code4Lib. There is a trapeze rig in Chicago and she plans on visiting it and hopes that some of you can come along as well. Trapeze classes are $57, last 2 hours, and are limited to 10 people. Currently TSNY Chicago hasn't release their class schedule for February -- they should be doing that around Jan. 1. If we can get enough people interested before then, we can buy out a whole class. If not it'll be first come, first serve (along with the general public).

There is a trapeze rig in Chicago and she plans on visiting it and hopes that some of you can come along as well. Since Google published its paper on BigTable in 2006, alternatives to the traditional relational database model have been growing in both variety and popularity. These new databases (often referred to as NoSQL databases) excel at handling problems faced by modern information systems that the traditional relational model cannot. They are particularly popular among organizations tackling the so-called "Big Data" problems. However, there are always tradeoffs involved when making such dramatic changes. While these traits lead to the incredible projects that are presented at Code4lib, creative technical work also often leads to unexpected, vexing, or disappointing results even from eventually successful projects (however you define the term). Learning more about how our colleagues deal with failure in various contexts could lead to the development of better methods for communicating the value of productive failure, modifying project plans ("The Pivot"), and failing more cheaply.

Hopefully we can define the format as a group, but a fairly high level of participation is crucial if this is to be a worthwhile preconference. Some possible agenda items that could be mixed and matched to fill the afternoon:

Since Google published its paper on BigTable in 2006, alternatives to the traditional relational database model have been growing in both variety and popularity. These new databases (often referred to as NoSQL databases) excel at handling problems faced by modern information systems that the traditional relational model cannot. They are particularly popular among organizations tackling the so-called "Big Data" problems. However, there are always tradeoffs involved when making such dramatic changes. Understanding how these different kinds of databases are designed and what they can offer is essential to the decision making process. In this precon I will discuss some of the various types of new databases (key-value, columnar, document, graph) and walk through examples or exercises using some of their open source implementations like Riak, HBase, CouchDB, and Neo4j.
