== Presentations ==
'''Platforms for Using Modern Web Dev Tools'''

''Brian Zelip (University of Maryland, Baltimore)''
*This presentation tours online applications for writing and deploying code. These resources are great for experimentation and learning, and are particularly useful for folks interested in modern JavaScript, CSS, Git, WordPress, etc. We'll wield code in each application to get a sense of what it can do and how it works, identifying concepts and trends along the way.
----
'''Teaching Python Camp in the Library'''

''Laura Wrubel & Megan Potterbusch (George Washington University)''
*Observing a strong desire for Python skills across disciplines, GW Libraries recently developed Python Camp for students and faculty. Presenters will share how they leveraged a GW faculty member’s openly licensed curriculum on computational foundations and taught introductory Python skills using live-coding instruction via JupyterHub and the Open edX platform. Learners who completed course requirements received a certificate of completion. The Camp has been delivered twice so far, as a 5-day Spring Break Camp and a 3-day Summer Camp. Presenters will share details about the structured camp format, what they've learned so far, and plans for the future.
----
'''The Digital is Critical: Creating and Maintaining Equitable Library Systems'''

''Kate Dohe (University of Maryland)''
*Digital libraries should be one of the most powerful tools available to libraries to reduce economic, geographic, ableist, and political barriers to global open access for scholarly and cultural materials. But how well are digital library systems delivering on these social justice aspirations? The application landscape has dwindled to a handful of commercial applications owned by businesses with long histories in commodifying content, and an array of open source products with high technological barriers to entry. Inequalities between institutions, communities, and valuation of labor are increasingly apparent within the open source digital library space. This discussion will explore the impacts of stratification on library technologies, and consider critical approaches to create and maintain digital projects that serve equitable goals.
----
'''USMAI data warehouse initiative: Overview of application design and ETL process development'''

''Tiffany Schoneboom & Joseph Koivisto (University of Maryland)''
*Starting in 2018, the Consortial Library Applications Support (CLAS) group at the University of Maryland began a data warehouse design and implementation initiative to better serve the reporting and analytics needs of University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) consortium member institutions. Working in conjunction with a data warehouse architect, members of the CLAS team and applications developers from the Software Systems Development and Research (SSDR) developed an applications architecture to support the storage, dissemination, and use of integrated library system data in a web-accessible portal. Instrumental in this endeavour was the development of an extract-transform-load (ETL) framework to facilitate the exchange of data between library systems and data warehouse data layers. In this presentation, we will provide a brief overview of the project background and the activities undertaken to ensure the usability of our platform by consortial members. Furthermore, this presentation will provide an in-depth look at the development of ETL methodologies, the design framework that informed development activities, and a status report on current design and testing.

== Proposed Lightning Talks ==
'''Successes and Setbacks in the University of Maryland - College Park Dataverse Pilot'''

''Margaret Rose Hunt (University of Maryland)''
*How many things can go wrong when implementing a new system? Apparently quite a few. This session will give an overview of the Dataverse pilot that is being conducted at the University of Maryland - College Park and a Library Science graduate student's perspective on working inside a data repository for the first time.

== Presentation Accessibility Action Items ==

=== Accessibility action item #1: ===

Submit your slides to current Program Committee chairs at least 24 hours before your presentation (the earlier the better)
When live captioning is provided during the three days of the general conference. Attendees, both local and remote, will be able to view a real-time text transcription of the conference talks.

In order to improve the quality of this service, we ask presenters to send their slides to us so that the captioners can use them as reference and improve the quality of the live text stream. Your slides will empower captioners to prepare for proper nouns, technical jargon, unusual spellings, etc. Note: you can change your slides after submission; you do not need to resubmit any changes unless you feel you added any difficult words or terms that would be challenging for live captioning.

=== Accessibility action item #2: Design a visually accessible presentation ===

==== Fonts: ====

* Avoid fonts with a thin stroke, and choose readable sans serif or serif fonts
* Use underlining, italics, and boldface sparingly
* Aim for 20-30-point fonts; don’t go below 18-point for slide content (if you plan to share your slides with the community, it’s okay to use smaller fonts for references and URIs)
* Good font examples: Helvetica and its clones (Arial, Calibri, etc.).
* Other good fonts are Gill Sans, Comic Sans (seriously!), Verdana, Franklin Gothic, Rockwell, Tahoma, Lucida, Times New Roman.

==== Colors: ====

Choose text and background colors that have good contrast (the web accessibility threshold isn’t relevant, but the higher the contrast the better): http://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/

For color blindness considerations, add patterns or labels in graphs and charts, especially if you want to use red and green or yellow and blue

==== Animations: ====

Avoid blinking text and animations that endlessly repeat.

If your presentation features lots of animations, videos, etc., put a warning at the start of your talk, especially if any of them have lots of flicker

=== Accessibility action item #3: If you plan to share your slides with the community, make your slide files accessible ===

Include speaker notes if the file format allows, and in particular, describe any images, tables, charts, etc.

Specific advice for different presentation tools and formats:

* PDF advice (PDF/A is best): http://webaim.org/techniques/acrobat/
* PowerPoint and KeyNote accessibility advice: http://webaim.org/techniques/powerpoint/, https://www.swarthmore.edu/sites/default/files/assets/documents/academic-advising-support/Accessible%20Presentations.pdf

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to:
The current Program Committee or Accessibility Committee

== Logistics ==
=== Venue ===
All sessions will take place in [http://www.lib.umd.edu/mckeldin/directions McKeldin Library] Room 6107, which can be found on [https://www.lib.umd.edu/binaries/content/assets/public/groupvisits/mck-floorplan.pdf this floor plan].

=== Travel ===
The Libraries have posted [http://www.lib.umd.edu/mckeldin/directions driving directions] for getting to campus. In addition, a comprehensive overview of [http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/maps.html travel options] is available from the campus office of conference and visitor services. Once you have arrived on campus, this [http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/current_map.pdf campus map] will help you locate the library (D10 - #035 ). There is a [https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/college-park.cfm College Park metro stop] on the green line, which is served by [http://www.transportation.umd.edu/shuttle/schedules/summer/104_CPM.pdf shuttle bus #104] to campus approximately every 10 minutes.

=== Parking ===
There is ample parking on campus for a daily maximum of $15.00. <del>A covered guest lot that is convenient to the Library is the Regents Drive Garage (#202 on the map mentioned above).</del> There is a large swim event taking place on North Campus which will take over a lot of central and northern guest parking. UMD Department of Transportation Services recommends that attendees arriving by car park in either the Mowatt Lane Garage (rooftop) or Lot MV next to Mowatt Lane Garage ([http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/current_map.pdf D12 - #404] on the map). Additional parking may be available in the Stadium Drive Garage ([http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/current_map.pdf C8 - #218]), but this garage may become crowded due to the swim meet. All visitors should avoid attempting to park in the Union Lane Garage off Campus Dr ([http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/current_map.pdf D9 - #179]) since it is currently out of service and closed to the public.

An alternate parking option is to use the College Park Metro parking lot and to use the [http://www.transportation.umd.edu/shuttle/schedules/summer/104_CPM.pdf University of Maryland shuttle bus #104].

Full information on guest parking options is available on the [http://cvs.umd.edu/visitors/parking.html conference and visitor services site]. *Please note*: parking services is very vigilant and quick to ticket, so please make sure that you pay for your parking space at the pay station (look to the signage in the lots for instructions).

'''Via US-1 (Baltimore Ave)'''
