[[Image:Friendly-Robut.png|right]]For a variety of reasons cultural heritage organizations often have [http://www.robotstxt.org/ robots.txt] documents that restrict what web crawlers (aka robots) can see on a website. This is a bad thing because it means that the content that libraries, archives and museums are putting online becomes virtually invisible to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, is less likely to be shared in social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and stands less of a chance of being incorporated into datasets such as Wikipedia. The Robots Are Our Friends campaign aims to help promote an understanding of the role that robots.txt plays in determining the footprint our cultural heritage collections have on the Web.

== Typical Reasons for not allowing Robots ==

* While indexing a dynamic site, robots can put an extra strain on the server, causing a slow response, or in some cases, pegging the CPU at 100%.

== Throttling ==

=== crawl-delay ===

Several major search engines support the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robots.txt#Crawl-delay_directive crawl delay directive, which you can put in your robots.txt file. This directive lets you tell web crawlers the minimum delay to wait between two successive requests.

<pre>
User-agent: *
Crawl-delay: 3
</pre>

=== Google ===
# Log in to [https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools Google Webmaster Tools]
# Select your site
# In the left-hand side, select '''Configuration''' and then '''Settings'''
# Under '''Crawl rate''' select '''Limit Google's maximum crawl rate'''
# Use the slider to adjust the amount of requests per second/number of seconds between requests
# Hit '''Save'''

Note: This may take a day or two to go into effect and '''it only lasts for 90 days''', at which point it will revert back to Google selecting the crawl rate.

=== Bing ===
# Log in to [http://bing.com/webmaster Bing Webmaster Tools]
# Select your site
# In the left-hand side, select '''Configure My Site''' and then '''Crawl Control'''
# Use the 2D chart to change the crawl rate for specific times of day. Or you can use the drop-down menu to move crawl activity to off-peak hours of traffic.

Note: Directives in robots.txt will override this setting (e.g. Setting <tt>Crawl-delay</tt>)

== Sitemaps ==
"Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site." -- www.sitemap.org

The full specification is available at [http://www.sitemaps.org/ sitemap.org]

Sitemaps can be added into your '''robots.txt''', or submitted directly to Google Webmaster Tools or Bing.

=== robots.txt ===
add the line:

<pre>
Sitemap: http://yourdomain.tld/path/to/sitemap.xml
</pre>

=== Google ===
# Log in to [https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools Google Webmaster Tools]
# Select your site
# In the left-hand side, select '''Optimization''' and then '''Sitemaps'''
# Click '''Add/Test Sitemap'''
# Enter the path to your sitemap on your server and click '''Submit Sitemap'''
The Craft Brew Drinkup at Code4lib 2012 is all about sharing and enjoying good beer with fellow conference attendees. The idea is to bring bottles of your favorite beers.

While you're not obligated to bring ''local beers'' from whereever you're from, participants are definitely encouraged to bring beer that you think is special and might be somewhat hard for others outside your area to find. Homebrew is especially welcome. Sign up below with your name, where you're from, and list a few brews or bottles you're thinking about (but not necessarily committing to) bringing along. You can also request that people bring specific beer if you so desire, but don't necessarily expect that your wishes will be granted.

''If you do not check bags or otherwise cannot arrange to bring beer from where you call home, you may be interested in buying beer from a local beer store. See the "Buying Beer in Seattle" section below for suggestions.''
=== Suggestions ===

'''Add using the following format: (person who you are making the request of): (your request) - (your name)'''

* Unnamed persons from the Keystone State: Sly Fox, any special Weyerbacher - anarchivist
* anyone: Boulevard smokestack series - danwho
* whosoever brought blueberry stout last year, more of that please - jastirn
* Oregonians/PNW folks: Deschutes Hop Henge (cuz it's seasonal) and Obsidian (cuz I like it) - anarchivist
* younga/Seattlites: Georgetown Donkey Deux; Georgetown Braggott - anarchivist
* if by chance anyone is coming from Salt Lake City: I would love Big Bad Baptist from Epic. Or the Wit if it's available again (I think it's the wrong season though). - HLPitts

=== Buying Beer in Seattle ===

from an email to the code4lib list:

: I can think of three good bottleshops (all w/ taps in case you want a growler) that are located on bus lines from downtown:
:
: * [http://bottleworksbeerstore.blogspot.com/ Bottleworks]: Probably the shop I frequent the most. Take the 16 to Wallingford.
: * [http://www.lastdropbeershop.com/ Last Drop]: Take the 71,72, or 73 north from downtown and get off at 80th.
: * [http://www.seattlebeerauthority.com/ Beer Authority]: probably the quickest trip from downtown on the 522. get off at the 125th St stop in Lake City and walk north a couple of blocks.
: * [http://www.fullthrottlebottles.com/ Full Throttle Bottles]: Buses 131, 106, 23 --about 30 minute ride.
: * Also, QFC (large grocery store chain) usually has a great selection.
: * [http://taphousegrill.com/index.html Tap House Grill]: It's a bar with 160 beers on tap, but they do growlers. 6th and Pike.
: * Lots of other pub/beer places noted on [http://g.co/maps/4m5pk the map]

=== Disclaimers ===

* This is an unofficial event organized by attendees of Code4lib 2012.
* All guests at the Drinkup must be 21 years of age or over with a [http://www.cherylslastcall.com/pdfs/Acceptable-ID-Forms.pdf valid form of ID].
* Any participation in the Drinkup is at your own risk.
* All guests are expected to drink responsibly and behave appropriately.

=== Packing and Shipping Beer ===

If you're flying to Code4lib, you will have to consider how to bring your beer. Some attendees in past years have packed beer in their checked luggage, and others have purchased a beer shipper that was checked separately as luggage. In any event, '''you will not be able to bring beer in carryon luggage.'''

The following are links to resources that provide info on packing your beer for transit.

=Code4Lib 2013 ideas=

===Schedule===
# Keep Super Bowl Sunday free
# Avoid snow and bitter cold!

==Food==

# If you do the preconferences in the main conference space (vs. in spread-out off-site spots), many people will expect breakfast or at least regular coffee/tea/soft-drink breaks throughout the day (so have them?)
# Is it possible to get a hot breakfast with/instead of continental?
# Consider Vegetarians
# Decent lunch menu - not taco or spaghetti :-)
# Automated Testing
# Two words: Soft pretzels.

(Note: some attendees really like tacos and/or spaghetti, and think these are excellent lunch choices. YMMV.)

==Registration==
Use EventBrite--it's worth the admin money for the ease of use, and the reports that can be generated

==Suggestions from dchuds talk==

* less complacency from overall committee--less burden on local org committee
* Advisory committee - made up of representatives from past hosts
* Programming committee - don't have voting on talks
* do work in the open
* build on experience from past conferences
* code4lib multicore
* multi-track conference
* support 500 people
* make it more like PyCon

==Other ideas==
* more regional c4l (but drop the "regional" suffix)
* keep voting on programming!!!

Ports blocked? Try this:

ssh -f -N -L 9999:chat.freenode.net:6667 machine.I.have.rights.on
...where chat.freenode.net:6667 is the machine/port you want to eventually get to, machine.i.have.rights.on is...well, that, and 9999 is an empty port on your local machine.

You'll be prompted for a password if you need one, after which you can put it in the background.
