Area Information
Parking
There is a parking deck (Hull Street Parking Deck) next to the Special Collections Building, but it is permit-only until 3 pm. We can secure a daily pass in the deck for you in advance for $4 per day, but you must indicate your need for this when you register for the conference (there is a check box on the form).
In addition, free street parking is sometimes available around the building, including directly behind it, and on surrounding streets like Waddell and Newton. See the map at the bottom of this page.
You may also elect to park downtown in Athens and make the short walk up to the building from there. Along with metered street parking, deck options include:
- Classic Center Deck
- College Avenue Deck
- Washington Street Deck
Finally, there are other parking decks on campus that allow hourly/daily parking any time of day and are a reasonable walk away. Closer options include the North Campus Deck and the Tate Center Deck.
Local transportation
There are free city buses that operate through campus, as well as limited campus bus service that may also be helpful. ACC Transit Route 5 runs hourly from a stop right outside the Special Collections Library to the Arch downtown. Additionally, the Campus Milledge bus stops at the corner of Lumpkin and Baldwin. Since this route leaves from campus, taking it to campus from downtown can take about 20 minutes, but it can be a quick and convenient option for getting back from downtown if needed.
Accommodations
There are a number of hotels in downtown Athens. The closest to the Special Collections Library are SpringHill Suites and Holiday Inn Express though most downtown hotels are within a completely walkable mile.
Food
The Special Collections Library is less than a 10 minute walk from the University of Georgia Arch, the primary connection between downtown Athens and UGA’s campus. Downtown has plenty of delicious options for a meal or a snack, including, but not limited to, some of our favorites:
- Bubble Cafe
- The Grill
- Little Italy
- The Globe
- Gyro Wrap
- Ted’s Most Best
We also have familiar franchised spots for those interested, including:
- Chick Fil A
- Barberitos
- Chipotle
- Cheba Hut
